A New Season
The GCB will begin its 2014-2015 season with gratitude to our former director, Jack Randall. Jack led us for several years and maintained the band’s bright outlook to the future. Thank you, Jack, for all you have done. We look forward to your participation in band as an instrumentalist.
I am excited about the new season because with it brings new music, new instrumentalists and a fresh start to our group of musicians who are returning from a summer break. Please mark your calendar to be with us on August 11th, 7:15 pm, our first rehearsal of the new season. Come early to register, meet new players and catch up with the news of others while we enjoy some refreshments as early as 6:30pm.

Sedona by Steven Reineke
This successful composer has captured in musical ideas the natural landscape of mountains and wide open spaces, and uses them to paint a musical canvas that is at once bold, entertaining, and filled with life. A short, memorable theme runs throughout the work, showing up in a delicate flute solo, an intricate woodwind fugue, a warm trombone solo, and a bold, triadic trumpet statement that will pick you up right out of your seat.
Mountain Thyme by Samuel R. Hazo
Written as a musical memorial, this beautifully emotional setting is a reworking of the traditional folk song The Braes of Baquhidder, also known as Wild Mountain Thyme, by Scottish writer Robert Tannahill. With a varied tapestry of colors, textures and dynamics, this stunning musical work takes full advantage of the depth and power of the modern wind band.
Who’s that Masked Man?
Why is it that so many of our favorite characters from film and television are always wearing masks? This phenomenon is examined in this intense, yet entertaining medley featuring themes from: “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The Mask of Zorro,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Spider Man” and “The Incredibles.
The Rakes of Mallow
Originally, this was the third movement of the Irish Suite for orchestra and was rescored for concert band by the composer. This marvelous setting of the Irish folksong is a programming gem, suitable for concerts, festivals and pop concerts, and an obvious must for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Nessun Dorma
One of the most memorable melodies ever written, this Puccini masterpiece is adapted wonderfully here for concert band. The opening theme is presented by a solo baritone (cued for trumpet or oboe), and is followed by soaring statements for the woodwinds and horn. The trumpets are added as the pieces build towards its signature climactic ending.
These, as well as new Christmas music, will be on the order as we head into the new season. I look forward to leading you and making music together for the benefit and betterment of our community.
